Zanskar Chadar Frozen River Trek Fee: Rs. 19,500/- Inclusive of all taxes

Chadar Frozen River Ice Cycling 2014

Cycling on Chadar [Frozen River Zanskar] -> Leh - Padum - Leh

The Chadar Trek journey that I took in 2012 left me mesmerized and all the images as seen on the first page other than the cycling picture are from the Chadar Trek of 2012. However, as I took up an yearly cycling touring expeditions starting with Manali - Leh solo cycling trip, thought of what about a cycling on the Chadar. Soon enough found out web that ice tires were there that give the grip and suddnely this whole bombastic idea to say the least looked feasible. On September 2013, I undertook another unique expedition which saw the cycle and myself journey through some lands of Ladakh where first time ever a cycle has gone. The travelogue is out there on team-bhp.com Leh-Chang la- Pangong-Chusul-Kakasang la-Hor la-Leh solo cycling trip and I am yet to finish the travelogue even after 3 years. By the way, writing is much more difficult that travelling and many will agree with me on that! Anyway I left my cycle in Leh itself, so as I head out from Kolkata. I had ordered the ice tires [ Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro ] but they did not reach me out by my flight date in January. The tires were then courierd to me as I was just sitting in Leh and it was only by 2nd week of February that I could start my ice bicycling journey on Chadar, with the intent of going from the road end at Chilling to Padum by cycling on the frozen ice cover or Chadar of River Zanskar.

What follows for the next 6 pages are some of the highlight images of this unique and may even be the first time that this was done - a complete River Zanskar Chadar ice cycling. But then this was not a solo kind of thing - the logistics and food supplies were carried by support staff which consisted of 3 fantastic Zanskaris. We came to know each other on Chadar itself as they looked somewhat bemusedly at a trekker with a cycle. But then the experiences that we had together - from sleeping in caves to sharing meals to going through some challenging terrains where we had to climb up the cliff shore edge as pushing up and sometimes even carrying the cycle on shoulders, the card games to sharing a smoke, the bond of friendship remains strong 3 years onwards.

"CHADAR" refers to the blanket or sheet as the Zanskar river transforms itself from a rapid river into a white blanket of ice during winter, a frozen spectacle awaits the trekker to be experienced of glass ice ranging from a bluish tinge to golden yellow that is seen during the few hours that sunlight reaches directly into the gorge to the milky whitish on a moonlit night - as said a trek journey like no other!

zanskar chadar trek Zanskar Ice Cycling: Zanskar valley lies to the south - west of Leh, surrounded by the Himalaya and Zanskar ranges, which is the most isolated of all the trans - Himalayan Valleys. Zanskar comprises of two main valleys the Stod(Doda Chu) and the Lanak (Tsarap Chu)which coverage below at Padum. The area remains inaccessible for nearly 7 months in the year. All passes close in the winter and the river freeze on the surface. Zanskaris walk along it to reach the Indus River in Nimoo (Chilling village), which is known as the Chadar (frozen blanket) Trek. The geographical isolation has resulted in the preservation of the Buddhist heritage and identity. Many ancient monastic establishments are still actively involve in religious activities some remote caves are believed to have been used by the successive Buddhist saints to sustain meditation in pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment.

As bitter winter comes up in the desolate valley, temperatures plummet and with the river mostly being in a gorge and thus having very little of direct sunlight mostly freezes over during the coldest months of mid January to mid February. Zanskaris since time immemorial, cut off during the winter months, have trekked on this river ice surface to reach Leh for their emergency supplies, education and also for the different winter religious festivals that take place in Leh.

The bus soon turns of the Leh-Srinagar highway towards Chilling and goes along the River Zanskar. Travel distance between Leh and Chilling is around 64 KM. We reach now to the point, past the village of Chilling to where the roadhead ends.

As said, yet to write the detailed travelogue but then what follows for the next 6 pages are some of images of this magnificient and one of a kind cycling expedition from Tilat Sumdo, the road end near Chilling, Leh, and all the way along the full Chadar trek journey till Tsarak Do, the road end near Padum. Whereas 90% of distance I was able to cycle, however, the return was tough as the ice melted in parts due and the cycle had to be carried on shoulders above the river bank cliff edge.

zanskar chadar trek As said, we slept in caves, some open even and a bit sheltered with a ledge. Also memorable was the trek to Naerak village and also the hospitality I received from Mr Phunchok, the homestay owner at Phibiting village of Padum. Just images follows as I am still to write the detailed travelogue.
